May is High Blood Pressure Education Month

April 27, 2015 by Lower Sioux HHS

Did you know for most people, when sodium intake is reduced, blood pressure begins decreasing in only a few weeks, on average?!

Here are a few tips on how you can reduce the sodium in your diet:

  • Fill up on fresh fruits and Veggies, fresh or frozen- they are naturally low in sodium.
  • Cut back on processed foods especially ready to eat foods like cured meats, lunch meats, pizza and canned soups.
  • When available, buy “low sodium,” “reduced sodium,” or “no salt added” versions of packaged or canned foods.
  • Skip adding salt when cooking. Keep salt off the kitchen counter, and dinner table. Use spices and herbs to season foods.
  • Cut back on salt little by little and pay attention to the natural tastes of various foods. Your taste for salt will lessen over time.
  • Consult with your Lower Sioux Registered Dietitian, Stacy Hammer~ Stacy can offer expert dietary advice tailored to help you meet your blood pressure goals. Contact Stacy at: 697-6193 to schedule your appointment today!
