The Lower Sioux Infant and Maternal Health project is funded by the Minnesota Department of Health in a focused effort to prevent infant mortality by strengthening families with health education outreach and community teachings. Main focus areas include social determinants of health, pre-term births, sleep-related sudden unexpected infant prevention (SUID), and birth defects.
Programming and resources include:
- Mom, Dad, and Parent support gatherings
- Tiospaye (extended family/community) gatherings
- Family friendly foods at Cansayapi Food Pantry
- Lactation/nursing supports
- Family Spirit home visiting
- Positive Indian Parenting classes
- FREE pack and plays through partnership with Cradle of Hope
- Safe sleep and cradleboard workshops
- FREE prenatal medication
- Teen Pregnancy Prevention – "Wawokiya Wellness" teen groups using evidence-based health curriculums and fun and safe activities
- Growing Doula/Birth Supporters in the community
