Questions to the Community - Lower Sioux Health and Human Services

Lower Sioux Victim Services and Minnesota Indigenous Women’s Society (MIWS) invite you to complete, to the best of your knowledge, the following questionnaire. We are in the process of drafting Tribal codes that protect women from violence, hold the abuser accountable and reflect our Community’s cultural and spiritual needs.

This discussion may need a Zoom meeting for those of you interested. If enough of you request this meeting, we will set it up. Please send me your name, address, phone number/email on the last page.

Is our Community interested in having criminal laws in place to address women victims of violence under a special federal law?*
For instance, imposing fines, jail/prison time, probation, restitution, and/or other sanctions
Is our Community interested in having civil laws in place to address women victims of violence?*
For instance, having the court handle actions between the victim and abuser, and issue orders for protection
How can we incorporate Dakota values and beliefs into criminal and civil codes?*
Would we benefit with a rehabilitation center for offenders? Did the Community have one in the past?*
What three tribal codes would protect women victims of violence and hold their abusers accountable?*
For example: Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking
Mission Statement for each tribal code: Who should we have these laws designed to protect?*
Ex: Lower Sioux Women, guests staying at Jackpot hotel, elders…
Mission Statement for each tribal code: What Dakota traditions and values should be included?*
Do any Elders know the traditional ways of helping/healing domestic violence victims and traditional ways of helping perpetrators?*
